Exploring the science of how talk works, Elizabeth Stokoe explains why every word matters and guides you to build effective, engaging and purposeful conversations.
Using a unique, visual approach to explore the science of how we communicate, Talk Effectively shows how understanding how conversation works will enable you to use the tool of talk with confidence, influence and authority. Uncover the hidden organization of the language we choose, the way we start and end conversations and the subtle, yet profound ways in which words influence us in all elements of our lives. Drawing on decades of study - from interrogations to sales enquiries, everyday talk to workplace interactions - we present 20 dip-in lessons that examine how talk really works and how every word matters.
Elizabeth Stokoe is a British scientist and Professor of Social Interaction at Loughborough University where she studies conversation analysis. Stokoe developed the Conversation Analytic Role-play Method (CARM), an approach to communications skills training based on evidence about what sorts of problems and roadblocks can occur in conversation, as well as the techniques and strategies that best resolve these problems.
